Internet Summit 2012 Highlights Content’s Continued Importance For Online Marketing

What you say on the Internet is at least as important as the means you use to convey your message. In other words, quality content plays a vital role in any effort to find success online. It doesn’t matter how you say it if no one cares about what you’re saying.

King Content’s royal status was underscored at Internet Summit 2012, which took place earlier this month in Raleigh, N.C. Seven Consultwebs.com team members from various departments participated in the two-day conference, which included over 100 speakers and more than 2,000 attendees.

The conference presented subject matter with both breadth and depth that was designed to help organizations improve their online performance and enhance returns on investment. Topics included Social Media marketing; search engine optimization (SEO); usability and user experience; and social, local and mobile marketing (SoLoMo), among others.

One thread that ran through virtually every aspect of the conference was the prominence of content. Whether an online campaign focuses on mobile devices, Social Media, SEO, videos, blogs – or, more often a combination of those and others – compelling and engaging content is the one ingredient that can’t be left out of the recipe for success. Without quality content at the core, hard work in all of the other aspects of online marketing will likely be for naught.

Speaking about trends in SEO, one of the conference presenters, Duane Forrester of Bing, ranked content first in relative importance before social, user experience, link-building and SEO considerations. He said that content is the reason for SEO, and authority is the goal.

The importance of cultivating authority with online content was stressed by another speaker, Melanie Phung, Director of New Media at PBS. In her presentation at Internet Summit 2012, Phung said that SEO has evolved from simply focusing on keywords and links to a new model that stresses content plus a number of other elements, such as relevance, authority, timeliness, relationships, localness and branding.
